Midi DIN inputs for iPad
  • So I got an Octatrack and a Digitakt, and naturally I want to sequence stuff in Audulus with them. Can anyone recommend a decent midi din interface for an iPad pro?
  • I bought a cheap midi to usb interface from Amazon. Works fine with my iMac but I haven’t tried it with the iPad. I’ll test it tomorrow and see if it works. Seems like it was under 10.
  • if it works, hook me up with an amazon link :)
  • I've used this one in combination with the Apple lightning to usb adapter for a few years: https://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Music-Keyboard-Interface-Converter/dp/B00VQTA0GS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1513170146&sr=8-5&keywords=midi+usb

It's probably the same one stschoen is talking about. I actually have a few of them for other projects.
  • I'm actually pretty excited about this one, though since I don't really plan to use it professionally I'm probably not going to get one: http://www.korg.com/us/products/computergear/plugkey/

Its main claim to fame is that it allows you to charge your device while using it for midi.
  • I bought a VicTsing USB IN-OUT MIDI Cable Converter PC to Music Keyboard Adapter Cord, but there are a bunch of similar units on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ACGMOA6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I tested it this morning with the iPad using the current Camera Kit adaptor which allows you to charge the iPad at the same time as you use a USB device, and it worked fine. I suspect that any of the class compliant MIDI to USB adaptors would probably work. They all look pretty similar. I've been using this one with an old Casio keyboard for quite a while to give me a second keyboard input.
  • Man I am such a sucker for Korg. I went with the PlugKey because the idea is to sample the iPad into the Octatrack, and the quarter inch outputs mean one less converter cable in all the spaghetti. Also, when I got the nanoKEY controller, it had integration with all the Korg apps I already own (gadet, module, mono/poly, etc) so I am hoping for some preconfigured integration. I appreciate the research!
  • Oh, nice. I didn't realize the new camera kits allowed charging.
  • Indeed they do, but I was picturing the camera kit plugged into the midi and the charge cable with a mini plug to quarter inch converter on the headphone jack and I suddenly had that meme about apple being a dongles company pop into my head. :-/

  • From a conference I attended once.
  • Not related to the MIDI situation at all, but........Knobs:

  • @RileyGuy honestly the digitakt is nearly all the fun at half the price. I have yet to really dive into the octatrack beyond just fiddling with the demo patch mostly because the digitakt is comparatively more immediate and compact.
  • @robertsyrett Good to know, thanks!
