Afterburn - an overdrive module
  • Hey everyone!

I'm not sure how many people actually want an overdrive, maybe the Tanh function works well for most, but I wanted something a little more controllable myself.

So I made an overdrive module with an EQ that changes the character of the distortion. It's sort of a CPU heavy module because of all the filters I ran, but it's extremely flexible, and you can really dial in the sound you're after, from subtle to severe.

The controls work more like a compressor than an overdrive, so you bring down the threshold into the audible range instead of pushing your signal up into the distortion range. If you're not getting enough distortion, put a gain knob in front of the module and push your signal into it.

The "Knee" in the 0 position is a on/off sort of distortion once you cross the threshold. Bringing the Knee up to 1 will smooth out the transition, so the distortion becomes much more responsive to the dynamic input. Much better for "breakup" style overdrive, I think.

Anyways, let me know what you think!
